Is AI going to take my job?
My take
My honest answer: it might
Some roles will become obsolete. But we’ve seen this pattern every time technology has moved forward. Think about when computers were first introduced to the workplace.
It also isn’t black and white. Some roles will become completely obsolete. Many more will evolve, with new day-to-day tasks that require AI fluency.
What makes up a “job”?
A job is a role with a set of responsibilities and tasks that line up with business requirements. So instead of asking whether AI will take your job, ask what will happen to each of your tasks. Each task will be one of these:
- Replaced by AI
- Enhanced: still done by a person, but a person using AI
- Unchanged by AI
From there, it’s a simple ratio: replaced vs. enhanced vs. unchanged. That ratio tells you far more about your future than your job title does.
Evaluate your own job
List the tasks that fill your week. Then run each one through the questions below. If you can answer “yes” to any of them, AI will likely replace that task.
- Is the task deterministic? It has a repeatable, rules-based output.
- Does the task rely on pattern recognition? Anything that involves spotting trends or anomalies, or categorizing inputs.
- Is the task mainly text manipulation? Summarizing, rewriting, translating, extracting, condensing, or reorganizing text.
- Is the task data entry, data cleaning, or data transformation? Structured inputs turned into structured outputs.
- Does the task involve producing standard business documents? Reports, decks, briefs, SOPs, templates, FAQs, documentation.
- Is the task answering predictable questions? Customer support, internal help desks, onboarding FAQs, troubleshooting guides.
- Is the task monitoring, logging, or tracking? Continuously tracking and flagging metrics on dashboards, systems, and workflows.
- Is the task scheduling, coordinating, or routing? Calendar management, workflow routing, ticket triage.
Count up your tasks. The more of your week that lands in “replaced,” the more your role is likely to change. For the tasks that remain, expect the day-to-day to evolve, and AI fluency to become part of doing them well.
